You will emerge from this workshop with the knowledge, research, interactive tools, and plans you need to move you and your OT team from a caseload model to a workload model.

Who this course is for

  • Established School-Based OT Practitioners

Established school-based OT practitioners who feel overwhelmed by the lack of time to complete the tasks required of them

  • Occupational Therapy Practitioners

Occupational therapy practitioners who know they learn more and will take action if provided with time-sensitive action-oriented deadlines.

  • Related Service Provider Teams

OT teams and other related services provider teams who know they could support more students more efficiently by using a workload model.

Here's how we will make the shift

Over 8 weeks, this workshop will allow you to take action & make changes this school year!

Using live-online presentations with slides, accessible online tools, and homework designed to facilitate your learning experience, I will support you in moving to a workload model at your school sites.

The workshop consists of 5 lessons over 8 weeks. This is by design to give you the chance to move towards a workload approach as you attend the workshop.

Week 1: How a workload differs from a caseload

It's a caseload world and we are all just living it.

It doesn't have to be that way, though. In the first week of the course, we will define how a caseload differs from a workload, both in theory and in practice. I will show you real-life examples of various caseloads and workloads so you can better explain the differences to your OT team and supervisors.

I will also share the research with you related to why we should be making the shift now! Our well-being and our students' outcomes depend on us making the shift.

(Manageable, but impactful homework assignments will be assigned each week)

Week 2: Understand YOUR Workload

In the second week, you will begin to take action. I will show you how to calculate your caseload and your workload as it stands on the day of this lesson. I will also share with you what a time study is, how to complete it, and provide you with the tools you need to get started.

After week 2, you are going to have a 10-day homework assignment to complete a time study. I will be there in weeks 3 and 4 to support you as you complete your time study with all the other therapists taking the course with you.

Weeks 3 & 4: Time Study Support

Because I can't be there to track your time for you, During weeks 3 & 4, I am going to be available to support you through the time study. We will have designated times to meet up and work through any problems you may be having with your time study.

Week 5: Planning the shift!

Now that you will have your time study data, we will work together to break down and analyze the data to determine where our time has gone. We will use this new information to develop a plan to move forward.

Week 6: Presenting the Data!

In week 6, you will learn how to take your action plan and present it to your administrator. This is the toughest part of moving to a workload approach and I will be there to support you! I will help you to create a well-articulated presentation so you are ready to have the tough discussions with your supervisor.

Week 7: Supervisor Check in!

I know it may take a little time to build up that confidence and schedule a time to meet with your supervisor. That is why in week 7 we will have a support session designed to overcome any fears related to having a tough chat with our administrators.

Week 8: Don't stop now!

Unfortunately, if you don't continue to track your workload, it will get out of hand. That is why in our final week together, I will provide you with the knowledge and tools to prevent you from moving back into a caseload model.

Yes, it will take a little upkeep every year. But with every year, your workload will become more clear and your administrators will learn to appreciate what you have done for the OT department, if not the entire special education department.

Bonus

You will also get access to the recorded version of the course so you can always go back and review the course material and access the helpful tools when you need them most.

Let's do it together!

Learn and implement your workload approach alongside other School-Based OT Practitioners.

Do you appreciate accountability?

With 8 live sessions and set assignment due dates, you will complete this workshop with a plan in place. There is no need to worry about whether or not you will finish the course. I will keep you accountable! The next live cohort start date will be announced soon

So what is the promise of this workshop?

By the end of the 8 weeks, you will have earned 4 hours of professional development and harnessed the knowledge and tools needed to show your administrators the valuable benefits of moving from a caseload model to a workload approach.

That includes developing a picture of your workload based on your current caseload, completing and analyzing a two-week time study, and drafting a document to share with your administrators.

Here are the exact objectives we will cover:

1. Identify how a caseload model differs from a workload model.

2. Recall research related to occupational therapy and using a workload approach.

3. Appraise your current caseload and workload and distinguish how it is impacting your practice.

4. Create a plan for moving to a workload approach and maintaining it.
